Ensuring children's safety during the lesson
Through my time serving as a Sunday school teacher, I learnt it is crucial for teachers to set rules and boundaries. As the class size is rather big as compared to preschools, it can get challenging to handle the children and get them to sit down properly and listen to the main teacher who is speaking. I managed to use my experience with working with children during my practicums and internship to ensure that the children behave appropriately during the lesson.

Brought the children out for trips to Hort Park and Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve to teach them about nature
This program is organised by Youth Corps Singapore (YCS) and they collaborated with Lakeside Family Services. As a volunteer, I participated in fortnightly sessions from 30 Mar 2019 to 15 June 2019. I helped to facilitate activities related to nature and guided the children whenever they required. We also brought the children out for trips to Hort Park and Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve to teach them about nature.
The children are mainly from less fortunate backgrounds and I managed to learn a lot from interacting with them. The most important thing that I learnt from the children is to never let your surroundings or environment affect how you feel. They are always happy and excited for every session and that really brought a smile to my face everytime.

outreach cluster at singapore christian home 2019
-
Engaged with the elderly at the home
-
Performed a few songs for the elderly to enjoy
-
Did some colouring activities with the elderly as well
Through this volunteering experience, I realised that the elderly who are not staying with their own family are actually very lonely. Some of the elderly from the home shared with me that they miss their children and grandchildren all the time. This made me feel a little upset inside as I am sure their children had a reason to place them under the care of others but at the same time the elderly do not really enjoy staying in the home.

I was also glad I could communicate with some of the elderly in Hokkien as many of them are not able to speak in English or Chinese.

humanitarian trip to chiang rai, thailand 2016
-
Spread the gospel to the children and villagers staying there
-
Came up with games for a carnival prepared for the children
-
Held lessons for the children about the gospel
When I was in Secondary 3, I went on a humanitarian trip to Chiang Rai, Thailand with New Creation Church. We were on a mission to spread the gospel to the children and villagers staying there. On top of that, we also prepared some games and lessons for the children there.
On one of the days, we prepared a carnival filled with lots of games and activities for the children. There were also a lot of prizes that we chose especially for the children. My heart melted when I saw their faces light up with joy and watching them run around with smiles plastered on their faces.
On the last night, we had a mini concert for the children and the villagers. To our surprise, many people turned up and most of them even accepted Christ into their lives. It was such a memorable and touching night that I will never forget.
When we had to leave, many of the children held on to our hands tightly and refused to let go. One of the girls even gave me her necklace so that I will remember her. This experience will be etched in my memory forever.

internationalisation trip to phnom penh, cambodia 2015
-
Taught the children at the orphanage simple English and played some games with them
-
Collected some provisions such as rice, oil and canned food to give to the orphanage
-
Painted then walls of a primary school with a fresh new coat of paint
When I was in Secondary 2, I went on the Internationalisation Trip organised by Crescent Girls’ School to Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It was definitely an eye-opening experience as it was my first overseas service-learning trip.
The language barrier was very hard to overcome so we had to use signs to communicate with them. Despite that, we still managed to form very close bonds with the children and were very upset when we had to leave.
At the orphanage, we taught the children there some simple English, as well as played some games with them. Before the trip, we also collected some provisions such as rice, oil and canned food to give to the orphanage. Even though the children there have lost their parents, they were still very cheerful and positive.
At the primary school, we helped to paint their walls with a fresh new coat of paint as well as paint some murals on the walls. While we were painting, the curious children gathered around and watched us. Some of them even offered to help us out. It really touched my heart as they were all so welcoming and friendly.
Apart from the service learning, we also went to visit some of the popular landmarks in Phnom Penh. We visited the Royal Palace, Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, Choeung Ek as well as the Silver Pagoda.
